Why have browser updates to upgrade Chromium become so infrequent?

The last Samsung Internet major release was near the start of April. October is about to begin, so it has been ~6 months. Even when version 28 released, it was built on Chromium 130, which was already nearly six months old at the time, and is near approaching a year old. Samsung Internet is the only major browser not to support webkitdirectory as a result: HTMLInputElement: webkitdirectory property - Web APIs | MDN . Chromium 141 just released, meanwhile. This is a newer phenomenon, affecting only the last 2 updates (and the current one):

  • 20 → 21 was ~3 months, and moved to a Chromium ~3 months old at the time
  • 21 → 22 was ~2 months, and moved to a Chromium ~4 months old at the time
  • 22 → 23 was ~3 months, and moved to a Chromium ~3 months old at the time
  • 23 → 24 was ~3 months, and moved to a Chromium ~4 months old at the time
  • 24 → 25 was ~3 months, and moved to a Chromium ~3 months old at the time
  • 25 → 26 was ~1.5 months, and moved to a Chromium ~4 months old at the time
  • 26 → 27 was ~5 months, and moved to a Chromium ~6 months old at the time
  • 27 → 28 was ~5 months, and moved to a Chromium ~6 months old at the time
  • 28 → today is ~6 months, and no update to Chromium has since occurred

Hello.

You can try using Samsung Internet v29 beta from the Galaxy store which should have an updated chromium engine.

And try reporting this feedback through the Samsung Members app/community.

Ok, opened a post for both this and my other forum post, Why has there not been a Samsung Internet release note since 23.0.1.1 , at https://us.community.samsung.com/t5/Samsung-Apps-and-Services/Why-has-there-been-no-Samsung-Internet-release-notes-on-website/td-p/3377928

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for raising these points.

Regarding the webkitdirectory issue, I’ve checked with the relevant team - there was indeed a crash in Samsung Internet v29. However, a patch has since been deployed, and this should now work as expected in versions after 29.X. Please ensure you are on the latest version of Samsung Internet and let us know if the issue still persists.

As for Chromium updates, we constantly work to bring in Chromium updates to Samsung Internet but each update requires substantial effort to make sure we offer high-quality browsing experience. We truly strive to deliver the best possible experience for our users, and that sometimes means taking a little extra time to get things right.

We appreciate your feedback and support in helping us make Samsung Internet better.
