Personally I doubt Samsung will switch operating system to Wear OS. WearOS is not developed for long time. Battery consumption is very heavy with compare to Tizen. Tizen works very smoothly, battery friendly and UX is much better than WOS. Tizen is just much better operating system for wearable devices. Actually it may replace a phone. Maybe one drawback: less apps.
I think Samsung should advertise Tizen on other non-Samsung watches. Maybe share license for other manufactures. For now Tizen is really the best system for wearables IMHO
If Samsung makes the decision to switch to Wear OS, the biggest losers are the developers.
We study the APIs and the code to run applications and watch faces.
On the other hand, I do not see any problem for designers, since designing with a program that does not need to know how to code has no effect.
Here the word Developer is very confused with designer, and it is not the same.
I opened an 1:1 enquiry 3 weeks ago, asking Samsung support if they are indeed switching to WearOS, because we as developers should be told in advance whether Tizen will still have a future or not.
They replied a few days after with:
“Regarding your inquiry, we would like to inform you that the department in charge is investigating the problem, but it may take some time.”
And a few days ago with:
“Regarding your inquiry, we would like to inform you that it is taking time for the department to officially announce the issue. Therefore, once the official guidance is confirmed, we will re-guide you.”
I really don’t know what to expect…
