Watch faces and lagging watch

Although Watch Face Studio gives a lot of tools to create wonderful watch faces, i noticed that it is not wise to use all or a lot of the possible options.

My observations about watch faces created with Watch Face Studio:
The watch becomes sluggish when:

  • Adding more than 3 options for image swapping, such as changing the watch hands to different styles.
  • Including large or numerous GIF or image sequence animations.
  • Adding more then 12 tag expressions.

Feedback from users suggests that Watch 4 encounters the most problems, followed by Watch 5, while Watch 6 seems to have fewer issues overall.

Not to mention the Wear app, which often closes when setting up the watch face, or if it does work, it’s extremely slow.

I’m curious to hear from other watch face creators about their experiences with these issues. Perhaps we could make a list detailing what features can be used and how frequently.

That watch face app has just never worked for me. Half the time the complications were not even there and now that they are, the app just hangs and does nothing when I try to change a complication or even a color! Not good at all. Oppo Reno 8T/GW5 Pro

@creationcue . Are you talking about having 12 conditionals on one line . I have a face with 28 images for the different moon phase each having an opacity tag that is a conditional of [MOON_PO] . A little orbiter . Analogue time and digital with date and steps count . There are also two hands that rotate with the 24 hrs and Moon . Works perfectly . I have not yet tested multiple animations but I a sure that if the Images are reasonably small pixel count wise it should not be an issue . I will have to do a test . Are you talking about Big GIFs . Some platforms limit the number of frames . I noticed if you actually load a Gif it can be quite big .
Oh . And 8 Customisable Complications Hidden .

Regarding the laggy watch, I believe the issue may be older, as I read about it here reddit. I’ve noticed this problem particularly on my newer, more complex watch faces. The Wear app seems to struggle with handling these faces, often freezing or closing, despite my efforts to optimize the images or animations.

If you would like to share the fake ZIP here I can test it for you on my GW4 CLASSIC . Sorry we went out for a walk .

I have this watch face that i think is risky to publish because of the animated images.
Please test it on your watch 4.

Note that all animations are only 4 - 20 kb and all other images optimized.

Memory usage check :
Normal mode only 4mb and
AOD mode also only 4mb.
The wfs file is 405.6kb.

It’s an retro game inspired watch face. I grew up with these games… i am that old

I got a question? How are you finding out what your memory usage is?

n WFS go to preferences>Plugins>Download Memory usage plugin. After installation you can see “Memory Check” in the upper right

Oh Brilliant Thanks .

Will check that soon still doing Domestic Stuff .
I have your face on my Watch . Seems ok to me . I will give it more time Later. I at the moment I do not see anything that needs a gif animation . You can flip flop two images very easily with Tags .
I can not find the Memory usage plugin for the life of me .
OK . Sorry . I have just seen the Paceman Animation . I need to spend more time on this . I think there are more than 4 gif animations on this .

Thanks man! I had no idea about this! I am still running 1.5.7 as I don’t want to run the latest just yet. Looks like the only plug in available for 1.5.7 is “clock face plugin”? Maybe it’s time for the latest version of WFS? Have you had any issues with it?

Only big issue is that watch or wear app lagging but it might not be caused by Watch Face Studio.

Please check if you can customize the face without problems on watch and on the wear app.

I generally Customise on my watch . For myself I mostly use the complications hidden . I get so confused which Apps show Icons and Text or both and are always managed differently . The Notification of Events is no use to me as I don’t bother with them and The text is Far to small for me to read .
Thanks for the pointers to the Plugins . Small list but it might grow .I suppose .

For me the Comps are best hidden . It is very difficult to get a good composition on your watch face if it is difficult to predict what they look like .

I started this topic to find out if anyone else has problems with a lagging watch or wear app while customizing it, and not about this specific watch faces functionality or design.
