Watch face compatibility

Today my watch face got approved and as always I promoted it on reddit with some coupons and many of the users complaining of the compatibility even though I set the form factor as wear os. I created it with wfs 1.4.20. Please help me guys.

I think it is because it doesn’t have a android app, just a wear os app… Tell them to click on “See details” on google play after using the link to see the button to buy and install on the watch… OR ask them to open the link directly on a browser…

Thanks a lot for your help. I posted your advice and hope it helps for them too. I’m a noob here, why do I need an android app for the watch face and how can I make an app in wfs for the watch face

Hi rockin.ramesh,

Check out this topic in the forum, where one of the community members, bredlix, has shared their code to create a companion app: Watch face companion/helper app source code

You don’t need a companion app. I have published many faces with no capability issues. I just make sure to “add form factor-wear OS” when I am publishing my face in Google Play Console. It’s hard to know for sure but the issue is its appearance on Google Play on the phone. My faces will have the message “this phone isn’t compatible with this app”, which may scare off, startle users. This might be due to me not publishing a phone app? I am no Google Play Console expert, but as far as I understand, compatibility with the phone just means that the user can download the app to their phone and then install on their watch. Mine just download directly to the user’s watch and then can be installed from there. This is only a problem in the Google Play Phone App because in a web browser Google Play doesn’t give this message. It is confusing to say the least and I often look at other’s watch faces on Google Play to check out their “compatibility issues”. The ones who don’t have this message seem to know something I don’t. I don’t even think having a companion app would solve this as I think it has everything to do with how you publish your faces in the Google Play Console but as you probably know yourself, that is a lot of trial and error and developers for the most part seem to keep their “methods” to themselves here.

You should also think about updating your WFS as the current version is 1.6.9

The message shows up because you don’t have a companion app and the watchface is not made to be installed on phone, that’s all. The user still can buy it and user normally on their watch as long as the watchis compatible. The idea of the companion app are two: one, prevent the message to show up by adding a phone app and two: making easier for the user to open the playstore on their watch, using just one button

Cool! Something new to figure out, thanks!

Isn’t it still in beta?

It’s been like that since like February or so…so who knows? I held off for a long time from 1.5.7 but I finally updated to 1.6.9 and it works for me. Some nice new features too like the memory check tool.

Great I’ll try it too. Thanks for your help.

Thanks to all for your quick response. Now I believe i don’t need a companion app compulsory. But does it increase the probability of discovery for my watch face on play store? If it does, then I’ll definitely make a companion app for every watch face.

I am gonna give it a go too but there’s just so much to stay on top of.
